Cruise Glacier Bay
Enjoy breathtaking views on the ship as you cruise through Glacier Bay!
With grinding, cracking, and echoing moans, massive chunks of ice fracture and cascade downward. This isn't your run-of-the-mill ice maker on the fritz; this is Glacier Bay at work, a spectacle unchanged for two centuries. Once shrouded beneath vast sheets of glacial ice, the bay now stands revealed, expanding as the glaciers retreat. In 1879, naturalist John Muir became the first to document this glacial movement, comparing charts from European explorers dating back 85 years earlier to determine a receding of over 30 miles. Established as a National Park in 1910, today Glacier Bay sprawls across 3.3 million acres, emerging from the grip of a mile-wide ice wall just two centuries ago. Its diverse ecosystems encompass wet tundra, coastal western hemlock and spruce forests, alpine tundra, glaciers and icefields, and post-glacial meadows. Each week, numerous vessels navigating the Inside Passage spend a day cruising the bay's 65-mile expanse. Upon arrival, a National Park Service ranger joins the cruise, offering a lively narration of the treeless peaks, icy fjords, secluded coves, and glacial panoramas unfolding along the journey. Yet Glacier Bay isn't solely about ice; the ranger also highlights the diverse marine and terrestrial wildlife, including killer and gray whales, sea otters, porpoises, moose, coyotes, wolves, and bears, visible both in the sea and on land. Leave your ice pick behind but remember to bring your binoculars for an unforgettable experience.
