Welcome to Costa Rica and it’s sizzling volcanoes and steaming hot springs, fabulous national parks with plentiful wildlife viewing, and miles and miles of pristine beaches. Pura Vida! Transfer from the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San José to your hotel for a two night stay. Welcome briefing.
This morning, you will head through Costa Rica's Central Valley to the Doka Estate, a working coffee plantation for more than 70 years, where you'll be taken "from seed to cup". The tour starts at the seedling station, where the process of planting coffee and the history of the estate is explained. You'll continue to the hydraulic processing plant, declared an Architectural Heritage for Humanity for being the oldest plant of its kind. You'll then see the fermentation process, followed by the drying and packing process. After a stop at the roasting plant, you finally can sample the award-winning brew at the estate's coffee shop, with stunning views of Poás volcano. Lunch at the estate and return to San José.
This morning you will make a San José city tour, including a visit to its magnificent Teatro Nacional, and the outstanding Gold Museum, containing Central America's largest collection of pre- Columbian gold jewelry. After lunch at a typical restaurant, head north to the rugged and varied Arenal Volcano National Park for a two night stay. The area is home to Arenal volcano, once one of the world's most active volcanoes, but now in a peaceful state of slumber, producing only the occasional plume of smoke. Visit the community-based Proyecto Asis, an animal rescue center, for some fascinating insights into animal conservation and some hands-on interaction with the animals. Continue to your hotel.
Head north this morning, through farmland yielding passion fruit, papaya, pineapple and bananas, to the small village of Los Chiles near the Nicaraguan border. Here you'll transfer to a comfortable motor boat in order to explore the channels and lagoons of Caño Negro's rich marshland ecosystem. Offering some of the best birding opportunities in Costa Rica, this wildlife reserve is a habitat for egrets, storks, spoonbills, ibis, anhinga, and cormorants, as well as cougars, tapirs, jaguars, ocelets, sloths, otters and a number of monkey species. Enjoy a typical lunch on the river, before returning to Arenal.
Morning visit to Místico Arenal. Here, a series of trails and bridges form a loop through the primary rainforest of a 250-acre private reserve, providing great animal-watching and volcano viewing. Sixteen fixed and hanging bridges allow you to see the forest at different levels. The longest swaying bridge is 97m long and the highest is 25m above the ground. Continue to Costa Rica’s beautiful Pacific Coast, for a relaxing two night stay at the Margaritaville Beach Resort. Lunch en route and dinner at the hotel.
Day at leisure to enjoy the golden sand beach, large swimming pool, and the many facilities of the wonderful Margaritaville Beach Resort.
This morning, head south towards Manuel Antonio, stopping on the way at the Tarcoles River for a boat trip not for the faint-hearted... Hundreds of crocodiles, some reaching three to four meters, live here. It is also one of the few places in Costa Rica to see scarlet macaws in the wild. Continue, for a one night stay, to Manuel Antonio national park, which packs in an assortment of natural attractions, from wildlife sheltered by rainforest to tranquil beaches and coral reefs teeming with marine life. Lunch en route and dinner at the hotel.
Manuel Antonio National Park's lush jungle absolutely brimms with wildlife. Hike along the park's lovely 3 km long trail, and easily spot dangling sloths, squawking toucans and macaws, colourful butterflies and hummingbirds, and playful capuchin, howler, and squirrel monkeys. Make a pit stop at one of the park's picture-perfect beaches. Lunch on the way back to San José. Special farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
